DESIGNER COLLECTION ANALYSIS: FALL/WINTER 2017/18 MILAN

No.2: Materials & Treatments Go for the New

Although colour made tremendous visual impact for fall/winter in Milan, upon closer inspection one realized that the fabrics were even more important. Tactile, soft to the touch fur and fake fur was plentiful as trims as well as in bold, colourful outerwear coats. Knits went into two directions, either supple and smooth or 3-D in textural coarse yarns, cable stitches and shaggy looks. Velvet continued from last season in bold colour ways.

Shimmer and shine were another major surface trend. Satin went from casual to dress from lightweight outerwear nylon to heavy dress duchesse. Coats made of high shine colourful patent had a futuristic plastic feel. Metallic materials evolved to include not only gold and silver but also bronze, brass, copper and metal finishes over colour.

Transparent fabrics transcended their spring/summer image. Mesh, lace and tulle were used to create ultra-feminine, glamorous looks.
